John Welsh | Photographer & Filmmaker in Philadelphia
Some photographers record a scene. John Welsh reads it. With over 30 years rooted in photojournalism, his work — editorial, portrait, documentary, commercial, travel — is built on patience, observation, and the kind of light that doesn’t announce itself. Based in Philadelphia. Working wherever the story is.
Selected Work
Documentary at Heart. Cinematic by Instinct.
Good photographs take time. They come from understanding a subject — not just pointing a lens at one. John works closely with clients and subjects, letting genuine moments surface rather than staging them. The result is work that feels composed but never contrived. Cinematic without being manufactured.
His still work spans editorial, portrait, environmental, sports, and travel photography. His film and video work — documentary series, branded films, institutional storytelling — is produced through Rare Light Media, the Philadelphia-area production studio he founded. His feature documentary, Beyond the Breaker, explores the loss of the last anthracite coal breaker in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
A long-term project photographing Iceland’s landscapes continues to shape his eye for atmosphere, texture, and the kind of quiet that speaks loudest. Explore the Iceland project →
